JCHS Facilities - Time 4 YOUR Action!

2/7/2018

Mr. Guy Leopard recently documented the condition of the facilities at James Campbell High School in Ewa Beach.  Guy’s presentation has been presented to the Ewa Beach Neighborhood Board, as well as to all elected officials in Ewa.  It's time to change the audience.  Please share this information with ALL of Hawaii's elected officials (not just the elected officials representing Ewa Beach and the Campbell Complex).  Mr. Leopard’s presentation highlights not only the current condition of James Campbell High School, but also the vast disparity that exists between other (smaller) Hawaii schools and James Campbell High School, which is, by far, the largest high school in Hawaii.

Some have said the current conditions are shocking.

Others have said the conditions are “not fair.”

Honolulu Civil Beat said, "Teeming with close to 3,200 students as the state's largest public school, Campbell High hasn't had a girls' athletic locker room since it opened in 1962."  Wow!  But the story doesn't end there... check out the presentation below.

When you are ready, use THIS ATTACHED FILE to send a letter to ALL elected officials.

Be sure to send in your comments below... (please be courteous; we'd like to share your comments with our legislators):

Schools within the Campbell Complex include:
  • Campbell High
  • Ewa Beach El
  • Ewa El
  • Ewa Makai Middle
  • Holomua El
  • Ilima Int
  • Iroquois Point El
  • Kaimiloa El
  • Keoneula El
  • Pohakea El

Keep in mind… James Campbell High School is, by far, the largest high school in the state of Hawaii.  In fact, according to Mr. Leopard, JCHS has over 3,000 students… well over the 2,600 students at Kapolei High School and 2,500 at Mililani.

Yet, funding for bringing the facilities to an acceptable condition seems elusive.

What are your thoughts?

Remember:

When you are ready, use THIS ATTACHED FILE to send a letter to ALL elected officials.

James Campbell High School is the largest public high school in Hawaii, not to mention it is overpopulated. A school like this SHOULD have the facilities it needs, the SAME facilities that are granted to other high schools such as, Mililani High School, Moanalua High School and the other High Schools mentioned in the presentation. The community shouldn't have to beg for the facilities that are REQUIRED.

I really hope our Ewa beach community gets these things done! Our school as well as the community is in need for the future of the next generation. This would be a blessing.

As a track athlete, their are many difficulties & challenges that my teammates, as well as the football & soccer team(s) face on the football field.
* Can't practice relays
* Can't practice getting out of the blocks
* Can't sprint around the curves without slipping
* Can't practice during or after a shower/ rain & their are patches & holes throughout the grass field

The difficulties of not having a restroom to support outdoor sports. During practice, it's needed to have a restroom to cater to the student athletes needs. As of now, athletes are using restrooms in the gym, O bldg, as well as D bldg. And at times, these restrooms are closed off.

The difficulties of not having a girls locker room. With the largest population in the state, it is crucial that both the boys & girls teams have locker rooms. As of now, the girls are left to use bathrooms & for the cheerleaders, they have the change in the cafeteria. With the things we are able to achieve in & out of the classroom, a girls locker room is only another step forward.

The intense disappointment that we can never host any track and field meets or state championship meets. Although JCHS has the best weather on the island and in the state. Last season the OIA teams had to compete in the rain at Pearl City. It would be great to host track meets. Especially with the fact that our track and field team(s) excel in OIA & state meets.

It is an absolute shame that the largest school in the State suffers without either athletic facilities or classrooms that a school of this size should automatically have. What's worse is our local representatives ineffectiveness at allocating funding for this obvious and deliberate oversight. Both Representative Matt LoPresti and Senator Will Espero have done nothing to address this issue yet continue to promise residents and parents that money has been allocated which has yet to be seen. Shameful

Guy Leopard's efforts have brought to light that JCHS could definitely use better athletic facilities, much of which will be addressed through the DOE Athletic Master Plan. It is unfortunate that Bryan Jeremiah, a serial politician, who continues to try and fail each election to oust Representative Matt LoPresti has politicized and personalized this important issue. In fact if he attended last night's Ewa Neighborhood Board which he has quit long ago and completely failed to even attend since before last year's election (unlike Rep. LoPresti, Rep. McDermott, and Senator Espero), he would know that Assistant Superintendent Heidi Armstrong stated there are two pots of construction money slated for JCHS for a brand new 30 classroom multiuse, multistory building in the amounts of $12 million and $27 million respectively to address overcrowding and expand academic opportunities for JCHS students. This money has been appropriated by the legislature over the last two sessions due to the work of Rep. LoPresti, Senator Espero, and Rep. McDermott (whose district JCHS is located in) and their colleagues. In fact, in a recent email Mr. Leopard sent to those representatives, he said he is “giving credit where credit is due” and praised them for those appropriations (you can ask Mr. Leopard to verify). Mr. Leopard has brought to light important issues regarding athletic facilities at JCHS and has become a strong advocate for improvements in his work with Ewa legislators, school officials, students, and the community. Please don’t let Brian Jeremiah hijack this important forum to try to bolster his own failed political ambitions.

I am currently a JCHS student as a sophomore. I was in track and cross country last year and we had a disadvantage of a proper field and track. I wish we could have a field and track for our future Athletes and students, it would really make a difference in our community.

I did not realize how poor the sports facilities were for JCHS. The weight room equipment is outdated and unsafe in a lot of ways. They do not have clamps to secure the weights while lifting. This alone could lead to someone's child getting an unnecessary injury. When I see how other high school facilities have been updated in the power point Guy provided, it makes me very angry to know that my child and her teammates have use these poor facilities. The facilities at JCHS is a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Maybe we should sue for discrimination/neglect?

Did You Know?

Before Ewa Beach became a town and city, it was a plantation farm when Hawaiʻi was under the rule of Queen Liliʻuokalani. Throughout the twentieth century, Ewa Beach has played a very influential role in Hawaii's culture, economy, and politics.  As we traverse the next 5 years, The Ewa Plain is expected to continue growing as the Ho‘opili Project begins to take shape.
