What happened to the Barber's Point Naval Air Station?

NAS Barber's Point Closed in 1999
The 1993 BRAC (Base Realignment And Closure) Committee identified MCAS Kaneohe to be closed and Marines and aircraft were to be moved to Barbers Point. Approximately one month later, the committee reversed it's decision and decreed that MCAS Kaneohe would remain open and NAS Barbers Point was to close, moving all P3 Squadrons and support personnel to Kaneohe. On 30 June 1999, an official joint military/civilian closure ceremony was held, marking the end of NAS Barbers Point.

Barber's Point Today
On July 2, 1999 the 3700 acre Kalaeloa Community Development District was opened at Barber's Point, and of that land, about 1000 acres was set aside for military housing and support activities, 500 acres was set aside for other federal agencies such as the National Guard and the Fish and Wildlife Service, and 2200 acres was transferred to the state of Hawaii and city of Honolulu agencies. The Hawaii State Department of Transportation assumed ownership of 750 acres of air facilities and today those facilities are known as Kalaeloa Airport. Did You Know?

Before Ewa Beach became a town and city, it was a plantation farm when Hawaiʻi was under the rule of Queen Liliʻuokalani. Throughout the twentieth century, Ewa Beach has played a very influential role in Hawaii's culture, economy, and politics.  As we traverse the next 5 years, The Ewa Plain is expected to continue growing as the Ho‘opili Project begins to take shape.
